Row, Row, Row Your Boat!

One place you have to visit before you die is the Blue Grotto, located on the coast of the Island of Capri, Italy. This is a sea cave where sunlight passes through an underwater cavity and shines through the seawater, creating an eerie blue reflection that glows throughout the cavern.

And if the glowing water isn’t crazy enough, the whole experience of getting in the Blue Grotto is exhilarating. To enter the low opening to the grotto, you have to lay in the bottom of a small rowing boat that only fits 3-4 people. Once in the cavern, all of the row boat guides sing local songs and the echoes abound throughout the cavern.

Check out this video of me going in the Blue Grotto (Note: My husband almost lost his hand trying to catch this footage.)

Tip
Be sure to go when it is good weather because you can’t get into the small opening during a high tide or stormy weather. Also, be sure to carry extra Euros with you that are easily accessible—the gondola guides expect a tip!

The Blue Grotto looks so beautiful! How do I get there once I am on the Island of Capri?

Thanks for the question! Once you are on the Island of Capri, there are a few ways you can get to the blue grotto.

1. You can get there by motorboats that leave from the port of Marina Grande.

2. You can also get to the Grotto by bus (from Anacapri) or by taxi.

Is is very enclosed? Should I take an anxiety pill before entering? Italian batcave and glowing blue water could very well cause panic attacks. Are the boat drivers highly trained? Can they smite down the bats with there ors? Has anyone ever been trapped and ran out of oxygen because of high tide? What is the risk?
